He has held various positions including Director of the Department of Surgery at Ruijin Hospital, Head of the Department of Surgical Education and Research, and President of Ruijin Hospital; Director of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Gastric Cancer; Director of the Shanghai Institute of Digestive Surgery; Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and President of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; and Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He also serves as an Executive Council Member of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Vice President of its Surgical Physician Branch, and Executive Council Member of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (Chairman of its Gastric Cancer Professional Committee). Additionally, he was elected as an Executive Council Member of the International Gastric Cancer Association (IGCA) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
With over four decades of extensive experience in clinical practice, medical education, and research in digestive surgery, he has conducted both basic and clinical studies on the comprehensive surgical treatment of gastric cancer for more than 40 years. As a leading expert in the comprehensive treatment of gastric cancer in China, he has made outstanding contributions to the nation's efforts in the prevention and treatment of this disease. The scientific research achievements he led and completed have received more than 10 awards, including the Second and Third Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award; he has published over 600 academic papers, including more than 150 indexed in SCI; and he has served as chief editor, associate editor, or contributor to nearly 10 monographs.
He has been honored with titles such as "Outstanding Hospital Director of China," "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker," and "Mid-Career and Young Expert with Outstanding Contributions by the Ministry of Health." He is also recipients of the Special Government Allowance from the State Council.
